Our new name honours the Grand Canal that once flowed through Mountmellick, bringing prosperity and connection to the town. Next door stands the historic Lock Master’s House a reminder of the canal’s legacy and the people who kept it moving. Though the canal no longer runs through Mountmellick, its story lives on and so does the sense of community it created.

Formerly Turley’s Bar, this landmark premises has been part of local life since 1910. For generations, Turley’s was a place where stories were told, milestones were celebrated, and neighbours gathered. That spirit of warmth and welcome remains at the heart of everything we do.

We had an absolutely wonderful dining experience at The Old Canal! From the moment we walked in, the service was excellent the staff were incredibly welcoming, attentive, and made sure we had everything we needed throughout the evening. The food was the absolute highlight. The steak was cooked to absolute perfection and packed with flavor. It paired brilliantly with the thick-cut, crispy golden chips, rich pepper sauce, and a perfectly poured, refreshing pint of beer. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, making it the perfect backdrop for a great night out. Fantastic food, great drinks, and top-tier service. We will definitely be back!

A really lovely experience - we had the beef & mushroom pie which was delicious - really tender meat and rich flavour, with absolutely amazing carrots, and a fantastic Irish take on risotto with bacon, haddock and peas. Truly exceptional front of house staff and the chef came round to check how we were enjoying it. We were just passing through, but this is the sort of place that might take us this way again in the future. Best of luck Joanne and Barry!

I was more than amazed by the food, atmosphere and service at The Old Canal in Mountmellick. The Hake special was delicious and the Bread & Butter pudding was exceptional. I will be recommending that everyone goes as you won't be disappointed.

Its about time mountmellick had an evening restaurant and all i can say is wow , the food is delicious , the portions are just right , staff and front of house are so welcoming and attentive , the beef featherblade is my go to and its melt in the mouth , the potatoe skins as a starter are my favorite and not to mention the deserts , the brownie is gorgeous 🙂 i highly reccomend a visit if passing by or you around the area you wont be dissapointed 👌🏻

Amazing meal tonight, stunning food with a concise menu. Melt in your mouth fish and featherblade of beef, chicken wings and pork bites amazing and gorgeous desserts. Staff were very attentive and service was excellent without being over the top. So impressed by this restaurant. Well done to all. We will be back 😊

Absolutely amazing experience in the Old Canal, the team are just incredible so friendly and knowledgable, nothing too much trouble. And for the food just phenomenal. The burger, the fries, fish everything that was served to us was just 10/10. Honestly couldn’t recommend anywhere else to visit for food!

Stopped in for a meal on their fist day serving food. Everything was top notch, made from scratch - and it shows. The meal left us discussing when we can go back before we even left. Delicious potato skins to start - I highly recommend. Fresh fish, freshly cooked for my main and a delicious bread and butter pudding for dessert. Service was great too, with a knowledgable team. If they can keep up this fantastic work, it'll be hard to book a table before long. This meal was simply brilliant.
